In a significant move to bolster public safety, Luxembourg City’s council has approved the installation of 110 additional CCTV cameras in the Gare district. This expansion will cover 30 more streets, enhancing the existing Visupol system managed by local police.
Proponents of the initiative argue that the increased surveillance aims to improve the quality of life and safety for residents and visitors. Councillor Robert Philippart of the Democratic Party highlighted the district’s complexity, noting the presence of schools, shops, housing, and areas frequented by vulnerable populations. He emphasized that the surveillance will strictly monitor public spaces, ensuring private properties remain unaffected.
However, some opposition members have expressed reservations. Concerns include the potential displacement of criminal activities to other neighborhoods and the overall effectiveness of CCTV in preventing crimes. Councillor Gabriel Boisante of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party questioned the cameras’ ability to deter immediate offenses, suggesting their primary utility lies in aiding subsequent investigations.
Despite differing viewpoints, the council acknowledges that CCTV is not a standalone solution. Plans are underway to implement additional measures, including community engagement and urban development projects, to address safety comprehensively. Future expansions of surveillance to other areas, such as Bonnevoie, Dommeldange, and Eich, are also under consideration.
As the city moves forward with this initiative, it remains committed to balancing security enhancements with the preservation of civil liberties, ensuring that Luxembourg City remains a safe and welcoming environment for all.
